Popular Places & Sightseeing

  1. Jaswant Garh War Memorial: A tribute to Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, who fought in the 1962 war and received the Maha Vir Chakra. Entry is free and the army offers tea to visitors. Many travellers say this stop stays with them longer than they expected.
  2. Sela Pass & Sela Lake: At 13,700 feet, this is the highest point before Tawang. The lake is often frozen, with sharp snow peaks around it. The air is thin here, so walk slowly and do not rush for photos.
  3. Nuranang Falls: A 100-metre waterfall near Jang with pine forest around it. It is fullest from May to November. A good, easy stop to stretch your legs.
  4. Tawang Monastery: Built in 1680 at 10,000 feet, it is the largest monastery in India, with over 400 monks living here. Entry is ₹20, and the museum is another ₹20. Dress modestly and keep your voice low inside the prayer hall.
  5. Madhuri Lake: This lake at 12,000 ft was formed after an earthquake, and old tree trunks still stand in the water. It needs an army permit from the DC office in Tawang, so keep a few ID copies with you. Best from April to October.
  6. Ziro Valley: Ziro is not part of this 7-day route as it is far from Tawang. If you have extra days, we can add it for rice fields, bamboo groves and Apatani culture.

Travel tips before you go

  • Altitude: Tawang sits at 10,000 feet. Drink plenty of water, eat light on the first night and avoid alcohol. If you get a headache or feel breathless, tell your driver and rest instead of pushing on to Bum La.
  • Weather: Snow or a landslide can close the road for a few hours, especially on Sela. This is why we suggest a late evening flight on Day 7.
  • Clothes: Pack thermals, a warm jacket, gloves, a cap and shoes with good grip.
  • Network and cash: Mobile signal can be weak on the route, so tell your family your plan in advance. Keep some cash for the monastery, local taxi and market.
